Venice Summer School 2007
The Summer School of the European Observatory was organized in collaboration with the Veneto Region and took place on the island of San Servolo, Venice, between 5 and 10 August 2007. The School took Human Resources for Health for its theme and was directed by Reinhard Busse, with Jim Buchan as co-director. Some 58 individuals from 27 countries took part and the participants were drawn from policy-makers and senior and mid-level professionals from ministries, public health bodies, insurance funds, NGOs, WHO country offices and other organizations. The course dealt with a diverse range of key issues related to human-resources planning, labour markets and labour conditions, measuring and awarding performance, and education and training.
The School’s approach was to run a series of lectures on the theory and practice of human-resource planning and management, illustrated with practical examples. Practical exercises, group sessions and country case studies, all making use of the participants’ experience, also took place and contributed greatly to the programme. The School also aimed at encouraging networking among participants, and the Veneto Region’s social programme provided significant encouragement for this.
