FAQ

  • 1. How do I know if I am qualified to participate in the Summer School?
    You will require sufficient English language skills to participate actively in technical discussions and manage background materials. You need to have a university degree or equivalent experience, and a minimum of 3 years working experience in an institution with decision-making powers in the health sector. You need to be working in a Member State of the WHO European Region or in an international organization working in Europe. A postgraduate qualification in health services planning or management related area and professional experience in health services planning, management or policy development will be additional assets of your application as well as knowledge of tools for planning and managing hospital services and/or designing integrated care models within hospitals and across sectors and/or negotiating and collaboration techniques for partnerships between provider institutions (between hospitals, different provider organizations, other actors) and/or incentives and performance management of hospital services and/or cross-border care practices.
  • 2. What will I benefit from participating in the Summer School?
    You will gain insights into and knowledge of the strategic positioning of hospitals within the health and care systems, the communities and other actors around them. This will enable you to address respective implications for hospital policy development and repercussions on hospitals’ internal organization in future, taking into account hospitals boundaries to the outside world. You will also understand how seamless links between services can be supported; and how to identify, plan for and manage hospitals' place in health and care systems. Upon successful participation you will obtain a certificate by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education which counts towards ongoing professional development in all EU Member States.
  • 3. Can I still benefit from the School in case my application is not successful?
    In case we are not able to offer you a place as a participant in the Summer School we will maintain your contacts in our database and you will receive electronic material distributed at the course and course presentations following conclusion of the School.
  • 4. I cannot afford the fees of the course. Can I still participate in the School?
    The Observatory and some of its partner organizations will provide a very limited number of bursaries. Please include a covering letter with your completed application form stating the reasons you require financial support. If you are in a country with a WHO and/or a World Bank programme in place, you may also ask us for information on how to contact their representatives.
  • 5. Will my course fees be reimbursed in case I have to cancel participation at short notice?
    In case you have to cancel your participation you will be reimbursed your total fee, if you cancel before the 23rd June 2008, after this date depending on how late you cancel we will need to levy a charge for administration and accommodation.
  • 6. If accepted, how much time will I need to allocate before the School starts for background reading and preparation?
    The Summer School builds on participants’ active contributions, insights and experiences, but it would be immensely helpful if you review material circulated in advance of the course. We recommend participants allocate approximately one to three days for preparing for the Summer School.
  • 7. How will I get to the venue once I arrive at Venice airport?
    There will be somebody at the Venice airport on Sunday from 8 am to 10 pm to assist you. If you do not arrive between these times, or by train or car, we will provide you with information on how to reach the venue.
  • 8. Where will the Summer School take place?
    The Observatory Venice Summer School will take place on the island of San Servolo, one of the most beautiful islands of the Venice lagoon. It is situated between the islands of Lido, San Lazzaro degli Armeni and San Clemente, about ten-minutes away by waterbus from Saint Mark’s Square, the historical heart of Venice. There is a regular public waterbus service between Saint Mark’s Square and San Servolo
  • 9. What can I expect regarding accommodation, food and other services at San Servolo?
    The venue is designed for students studying in San Servolo or at the Venice University, the furniture is simple and food is basic. The reception is always open and all rooms are equipped with air conditioning, internet access and cable connection, telephone and satellite TV but nevertheless the rooms are of a very basic standard. The island has a coffee house and a canteen but please note that these are open only during the working hours.
  • 10. Will I be able to bring my partner and family?
    There will be a limited amount of double and family rooms available and you may bring your partner and family but you need to let us know in advance on the application form and you will have to cover these extra costs. The extra costs will be calculated for you and you will be informed of them upon acceptance of your application.
